Japan in 100 Words: From Anime to Zen by Ornella Civardi

A fun and enjoyable read explaining many elements of Japanese culture from A to Z. Lots of interesting popular concepts explained from folklore, pop culture and the arts of Japan. I think it is a book that would encourage further studies.

Being a collector of Fountain pens the section on Maki-e and Urushi interested me as an owner of Japanese pens made from those crafts.

The book is beautifully illustrated.

Monster Musume Vol 1 & 2 by Okayado

I was browsing on Amazon and having read some One Punch Man samples this manga was recommended to me. I have always thought it too odd or pervy for me to read so never bothered trying or paying attention beyond glancing at the cover. I am between books and decided to try it.

Yes there is gratuitious manga boobs and lots of flesh but in terms of plot and characters its pretty fun and humourous. Quite enjoyed the plot where a guy ends up having a species exhange with a snake-woman and then a bird woman and finally a centaur type woman. All seem to be like bitches in heat and hijinks ensues. Its a light and breezy read and good fun. I have read the first two in the series and maybe I’ll check out the rest.

EDIT 12/11/25

I have since read Volumes 3 to 6 and have really enjoyed them. Not my usual tastes but very funny reads.

Attack On Titan: Volume 5 (Manga)

My first manga I have read for this year, I could be naive and say I am reading this to pad out my total books read but genuinely I am reading this to compare the manga to the anime. Last year I read the first 4 volumes and this is the first one I have finished for this year.

I enjoyed the anime very much and it is nice to read the manga, that said I do prefer the anime. There are some subtle differences between both versions.

This fifth volumes follows the scouts from Eren’s Titan reveal and introduction to the Scouts up to the Scouts expeditionary mission and the reveal of a new type of Titan…

Musings on Future Posts

Since my last post yesterday I have done some thinking and some spontaneous things, I have decided that I will definitely be nore active with this and maybe other social medias too. I have purchased the domain to this blog so that it is now Valleyreading.uk and I was playing with my laptop and created a cute little logo which I like very much.

I feel that if I have an investment and incentive to inspire and encourgae me to regularly use this and post here too. The small financial investment is a reason to not neglect this. I have a few ideas for content and although the address and typical content is bookish I don’t think that would be my only content, I may diversify through my interests of which there is many and I am expecting 2025 to have a few twists too which I will be sure to document.

For content I am thinking of doing the following:

  • Book Reviews
  • Anime reviews
  • Tech reviews
  • Game Reviews
  • Shave of The Day/Week posts
  • General musings and life posts.
  • Relating to my interests
  • WordPress Daily Writing Prompt

Those are just some of my ideas and similar to what I already have posted but I will put more effort into it like I used to with my old blog which I grew quite well before I killed it.

From my last post I have began to jot down a rough reading list but I have sooo many books to go through I sort of don’t want to. Being a bit of an anorak I have every single book itemised and numbered on a spreadsheet so I may do a random number generator and see what it falls on for some reads. Could also use CoPilot AI to suggest some reads and see what it comes up with.

I am like a London bus, wait a year to make a post and then two at once, and probably a third to follow imminently….
